Female Incontinence

Female Incontinence is the inability to control or prevent urine leakage. The urine leakage may occur while sneezing, coughing, laughing, or lifting, this is also known as stress incontinence. The leakage is caused by displacement of the bladder and urethra that may be the result of childbirth or aging. The surgical procedure to correct incontinence is known as urethral suspension or vesicourethral suspension. This procedure involves stitching the bladder neck to the pubic bone to elevate the vagina and urethra. The surgery involves general anethesia; a catheter will be placed to allow urine and fluid to drain. The urine may appear bloody at first, but this will clear in a few days. The catheter will probably be removed a few days after surgery when the patient is able to empty her bladder; however, in some cases the catheter will remain for several weeks depending on the patients ability to empty her bladder. The recovery period will vary from patient to patient. The staples from the incision will be removed on the post-surgical office visit (approximately three to seven days). The recovery time for surgery varies with each patient depending on the health status prior to surgery. It is usually four to six weeks.
